Jamila Barakat

Jamila Barakat is a Palestinian-German interdisciplinary artist, curator and educator based in Berlin. With a background in Political Science and Fine Arts, her practice bridges personal memory and political reality. Working across painting, photography, collage, ceramics and text, she explores fragmented histories, intergenerational trauma and the fluidity of belonging. Barakat draws from her family’s transnational history across Palestine, Kuwait, the UAE and Germany to examine identity, exile and resistance through a poetic, process-based lens.

Her work often engages with marginalized perspectives, challenging dominant narratives and reclaiming silenced archives. Fragmentation becomes a method for holding contradiction and creating space for multiple, unresolved truths.

In 2020, Barakat co-founded the Interspace Collective, creating curatorial platforms that center solidarity, dialogue and emancipatory storytelling. She is committed to community-based practices that empower and connect.

Her work has been exhibited at CCA Berlin, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Haus der Kulturen der Welt and got published by Archive Books or Arts of the Working Class.
